REVITALIZING THE HMONG RPA:
A Unified Writing System
for All Dialects
The Hmong Roman Popular Alphabet (RPA) is undergoing a revitalization. For years, educators, researchers, and community members have recognized that the current RPA system does not fully accommodate all Hmong dialects and linguistic sounds. This effort aims to create a more inclusive and accurate representation of the language.
The project will bring together experts from various fields related to Hmong culture, history, language, and education. Together, we will develop and adopt a preliminary standards framework for the unified RPA writing system. This framework will then be pilot tested and refined, with the goal of implementation in schools by January 2026.
